The Fear Factor

Science Has Recently Explained the odd behavior of the United States under the administration of former president George W. Bush.

It Seems That Conservative People are generally more fearful than liberal people.

Apparently This Is Scientific Fact. (Let’s ignore for the moment what conservative Americans think about “science” and its “facts.”)

It Was Conservative Fear that got us to invade Iraq, in order to protect ourselves here at home. It was conservative fear that tried to give us a no-cost war, ignoring the economic reality that you have to pay for what you get. Now the nation has to pay for the years of Republican terror, ideologically driven tax cuts, and reckless spending.

Now Conservative Fear of the Costs of Their Mismanagement—from 1980 to the present, and entirely from 2001 to 2007—has them terrified. Meanwhile, all American taxpayers must pay the price.

Like Deer in Headlights

It Is Not that Republicans Want to Block the Hand on the Nation’s Tiller. It’s just that they are so terrified of what may happen during the restoration process—with the huge increase in debt that was already at historic levels—that they don’t know what else to do.

Republican Leaders in Congress, and the legion of media pundits who enable them, are frozen like deer in the headlights of Keynesian economics.

“The Land of the Safe and the Home of the Cowardly” are not the way we describe ourselves in “The Star Spangled Banner.” But these terms describe the practice of the Bush administration, following the attacks of September 11, 2001. The Conservatives shifted into fear mode.

And This Is the Cowardice that We Witness Today. According to science, conservatives cannot help themselves.

It Is No Accident That the Bush Administration’s effort to restore the country following September 11th was called the “War on Terror.” Because “terror” is what conservatives feel, on a physiological basis.

They Can’t Help It. It’s in their genes.

Even Now, Our Former Vice-President is out on the media trail, trying to pin the blame on President Obama for Dick Cheney’s cowardice. One can see the terror in the poor man’s eyes.

And So Now While We All Worry Our Way Forward, out of this mess caused by “trickle-down economics” and a selfishly fickle dedication to our own interests abroad, the Republicans can’t help dragging against what America needs to do to get back on course.

When Things Get Scary, Every Family Has a Few Timid Members who cower in the corner during a crisis. It is up to the rest of us, under the Obama/Biden leadership, to take the real risks.

We Will Likely Not Get Any Apology from the Republicans for what they have done. But we Americans are one nation, indivisible. The Republicans, useless as they show themselves to be in the current challenge, are part of America.

Let Them Continue to Whine and to Moan. We will all somehow get through this together.

NEWS FLASH! American President Says Nation Needs to Focus

DATELINE: Washington, DC–If he had been speaking earlier today at a previously disclosed location known as “the White House,” the nation’s newest president might have issued a statement similar to this:


What America Needs Right Now Is Jobs, and the security that a regular paycheck provides. Give Americans jobs, with some sense of job security, and we can all get back to work. We can put this recession thing behind us. As we focus on this together, we move forward together—now.

But Today, I Want to Address Three Issues related to partisan concerns, as the branches of American government work together to stimulate the economy, to create jobs, and to get the American economy back to work.

In This Process of Economic Stimulation:

□ First, We Want to Avoid Creating Inflation via excessive spending.

□ Second, We Want to Give the American People Tax Cuts whenever it is prudent to do so, while avoiding tax cuts that continue to redistribute wealth—whether from the poor to the wealthy or the other way around.

□ Third, We Want to Give States and Local Communities the Revenue Benefits that their Senators and Representatives know best for them, while avoiding the reckless growth of the earmarks and pork-barrel spending that make government look like a reckless waster of our hard-earned pay.

Here Is the Way My Administration Sees these various issues:

The Time of Inflation Is Not Now

Inflation Cannot Be Our Dominant Concern Right Now. Historically, shortages of goods in relation to an overabundant money supply leads directly to inflation. Fortunately, our problems right now are not supply and production, but demand and the flow of capital. Thus we can afford to spend money to create more jobs. More jobs in turn will put more money into the economy, creating a trickle-down effect to keep other businesses going.

What Concerns Us the Most Is the Lack of Job Security, the threat to American paychecks, and the ability to keep our homes. The time to fear inflation is not now.

The Time for Tax Cuts Is Not Now

At a Time When the Price of Everything from Houses and Automobiles to groceries and gasoline is going lower, Americans do not especially need more tax cuts. When millions of Americans are not getting a paycheck, tax cuts won’t help them, anyway.

At a Time When the Nation’s Leading Corporations are laying off employees by the thousands and teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, the nation’s businesses have no need for tax cuts, either. Right now, tax cuts are not the most-relevant cure for the economy. It’s the people without jobs who need help the most. Not those with jobs who continue to struggle along as they have over the recent past.

Tax Cuts for Near-Bankrupt Corporations and the Unemployed are not what we need right now. For the time being, we should forget about it.

The Time for Earmarks Is Not Now

At the Same Time, Now Is Not the Time for Earmarks, even though they represent only about 1% of the current spending, and the spending both by Democrats and Republicans is pretty much even. It is Congress’s job to know what their folks back home need. And for the current stimulus bill and budget, it seems safe to say that what Congress has done has been its job, on both sides of the aisle.* But the American people are clear in their concern over the concept of earmarks. And regardless, now is generally not a good time for such projects.

Now Is the Time to Squeeze Out the Earmarks, no matter how much individual Republicans and Democrats need to carry something to their folks back home. Later, Congress may get back to business as usual. But for the time being, we should forget about it.

America Needs to Focus

Over the Past 49 Days, My Administration has been getting to know the other branches of the government. We walked into the middle of the economic crisis and we also walked into the end of the Federal budget process. The stimulus plan and the Federal budget needed to move forward, with the assistance of our leaders in Congress, whose job it is to approve these measures. And this is what your government has been doing.

But Now Is the Time to focus our very best efforts.

Going Forward Over the Near-Term, we need to be as single-minded as we possibly can be—to stem the loss of jobs, to turn the job situation around—so that Americans get back to taking advantage of the abundance of supplies in America—including those new homes and those new automobiles.

A Modest Mortgage-Solution Proposal

Forget Bailouts, Bad Banks, and Toxic Mortgages Assets. Here’s a new idea for solving the housing-mortgage crisis:

The Department of Mortgage-Crisis Resolution*

Let’s Insert the Federal Government Between the Homeowner and the Mortgage Company. With its long-term investment horizon, this is truly something that really only the Federal government can afford to do.

Homeowners in Sub-Prime, Adjustable-Rate Mortgages in this new program can continue to pay the same monthly payment that they were paying before the crisis-inducing rates increased.

And Mortgage Companies Can Receive the Higher, Adjusted, Contractual Payments.

In Between Homeowner and Mortgage Company sits the Federal Government, with its new “Department of Mortgage Crisis Resolution.”*

Here’s How It Works:

1. The DMCR issues the homeowner a second mortgage and puts a lien on the underlying property. This additional mortgage extends the length of the original mortgage beyond the length of the original mortgage, with an additional “due on sale” clause.

2. The homeowner makes his regular monthly payment directly to the DMCR.

3. The DMCR calculates the difference between the payment received and the outgoing payment to the mortgage company, and adds that difference to the homeowner’s second mortgage.

4. The DMCR then forwards the higher, adjusted payment to the mortgage company, keeping this sub-prime mortgage current.

5. When the first mortgage is paid in full, the second mortgage kicks in, at the same monthly payment rate as the first mortgage, until the second mortgage is paid in full.

6. If the house is sold prior to the term of one or both mortgages, the sale is contingent on satisfaction of both mortgages.

If You Think About it, This Is a Pretty Good Plan.

No “purchase” of “bad assets” or “toxic debt.”
No unraveling of “tranches.”
No “moral hazard.”
No “good banks” and “bad banks.”
No “free ride for deadbeats.”
No “windfall profits” for “cold-hearted” banks.

Only the Federal Government can afford to wait out such a long time-frame for the return of its mortgage investment. But no bad assets are purchased. And the taxpayers eventually will get every invested penny back, with interest.

Since Most Houses Are Sold Long Before Thirty-year Mortgages Are Paid Off, we will probably get most of our money back sooner than the thirty or forty years of the mortgage. And the homes are almost certain to increase in value far beyond initial mortgage amounts, over a long-enough time. So long as we act now to prop up this long-term value.

The Federal Government—We, the Taxpayers—Are Assured of Getting Our Money Back. And since the DMCR mortgage rate can match current retail mortgage rates, the net effect is of the government buying long-term Taxpayer Bonds, which purchases counterbalance the sales of T-Bills and Treasury bonds.

This Is a Win/Win/Win Opportunity to prop up home values, minimize mortgage defaults, protect the homeowner, protect the mortgage companies and investors, and kick-start the American economy once again. And quickly.

What Will the Partisans Say About This?

The Democrats Might Oppose This Plan because the struggling homeowner doesn’t get a handout from the Federal government. And the Federal government doesn’t get to spend just wads and wads of taxpayer money that we don’t have. Curse those tax-and-spend Democrats!

The Republicans Might Oppose This Plan on the ideological principle that the Federal Government just shouldn’t get involved at all in commercial enterprises. Curse those tight-fisted spend-and-spend Republicans!

But the American People, Desperate for Change, might just look at this thing, see the potential profit for our grandchildren, instead of endless debt. Can the American people of both sides of the ideological, partisan divide go along with a plan that works for everybody?

Like the American Voters Said in November,

“Yes, We Can!”

What Have You Heard from Your Republican Congressman about the stimulus package currently working its way through the Federal government? What doesn't he like? What would he change?

What Conservative Ideal Would He Apply to make this stimulus package better?

What Changes Would It Take, to get your Republican Congressman to Take Action on behalf of the American people?

What Has Your Republican Representative Told You about the failure of Conservative ideology, as evidenced by six years of Republican-controlled government (2001–2007)? As admitted in former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s apology to Congress last Fall?

Let’s Examine These Tenets of Conservative,
Republican Economic Ideology:

If the Great Depression Was Ended by World War II, and not by FDR’s New Deal, why hasn’t the Republican-led War in Iraq boosted the economy this time around?

If Free Markets Do Not Destroy Jobs, but create them, why are all of America’s manufacturing jobs going overseas?

If Free Markets Regulate Themselves, why are so many corporate CEOs giving themselves huge bonuses at a time when their companies are posting record-setting losses, and when bankruptcies are stealing all value from under the noses of their shareholder bosses?

If Tax Cuts Make the Economy Thrive, why has the economy gone to pieces under Republican leadership?

Conservative Economic Ideology Is: Dead

Conservative Ideology as Administered under Our Republican Leaders Has Failed. The Republican leadership offers nothing to replace it. Instead, they line up for photo opportunities with the new President, negotiate changes to the stimulus package—including even more tax cuts—and then brashly vote against it. Unanimously. One and all.

What Do Our Republican Representatives
Offer Us Instead?

The Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives Have Nothing to Offer Us. Or so they would have us believe. And so they thumb their noses at the American people, by grinning big grins while thumbing their noses at the President.

Maybe These Representatives Think it Makes Them Look Good, and tough, and smart, to blind-side America's new President.

The Republican Congressional Caucus Has Nothing Left to Offer America. Instead, its members cleverly stonewall the President, while offering up nothing—not one single new idea—to get the economy going.

Smart? Or Heartless?

Maybe the Republicans Think They Look Smart, standing up there in the Nation's Capitol, thumbing their noses and grinning at their constituents.

Maybe with Their Families Safe and Their Jobs and Houses Secure, they don't have anything more-important to worry about, than trying to undermine the spirit of the American people, by trying to make the President look bad.

But in a Time of National Crisis, There's Nothing Smart or Clever or Funny about standing before the American people, while millions of us are losing our homes and our jobs, and there stand the Republicans in Congress, displaying a heartless audacity of disdain.

Republican Pot Calls Democratic Kettle "Black"

Speaking on his MSNBC Talk Show, Morning Joe, former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough today used the Bush White House as an example of how Republicans use government mechanisms—such as “pork barrel spending” and “you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours”—to over-extend the national pocketbook. These are the same mechanisms that Democrats historically use to get the work of government done, and judging from Mr. Scarborough's explanation, there is not much difference.

Telling How it Happened that the Bush White House and a Republican Congress lost sight of fiscal Conservative ideals, Mr. Scarborough explained that President George W. Bush needed a hands-off policy for his War in Iraq, and effected a reciprocal hands-off policy in relation to whatever else the Republican Congress chose to do on behalf of the American people.

President Bush Got Away with the War in Iraq. And Congress got away with economic murder.

This De Facto Treaty Between the Executive and the Legislative Branches of the Federal government meant that President Bush did not veto Congress’s legislation. In return, Congress gave the President free rein with the Iraq War.

In Other Words, per Mr. Scarborough, the government mechanisms of “pork-barrel spending” and “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” played the same role for “post-9/11” Republicans that these mechanisms played in the Democratic era of the “Great Society,” under Lyndon Baines Johnson.

The Ideologies of “Tax and Spend” and “Defer and Spend” may sound different to the ear, but the effect on the national economy is virtually the same.

History Now Judges LBJ's “Great Society”

The Grand Result of the “Great Society” culminated in this week’s election of Barack Obama as president-elect of the United States.

The Cost of LBJ’s Many Programs, simultaneous with the costs of the war in Vietnam, was high. It included a political switch toward the Republican Party, with the South abandoning the Democratic party completely until this year, and it gave ascendancy to the Conservative theories of Ronald Reagan through George W. Bush.

The Future Will Judge the “War on Terror”

The Result of “This Republican Era” will be judged by history, too. As LBJ’s Great Society has now finally been judged. Let us hope that the final verdict of the Bush extravagances will be as high.

How Both Sides Want It Both Ways

But the Important Thing to See, as far as American politics are concerned, is that we really are one nation, with comparable policies and ways of doing things:

We All Hate it When the Other Guy uses the Federal government to supplant States’ Rights, and we all hate it when States’ Rights trump progress best-available to the Federal government.

We Love Term Limits When the Other Party Is in Power, but when our party is in power, we see how essential are the advantages gained from continuity.

We Hate It When One Party Governs by “tax-and-spend,” and we hate it just as much when the other party governs by “defer-and-spend.”

“Pork-Barrel Spending” is only “pork” when it benefits genetic studies of fruit-flies to help cure autism, but not when it benefits the families of children with special needs. It’s “pork” when it goes to what you want, but it’s essential government spending when it’s for me and mine.

In Sum, the Democrats under Lyndon B. Johnson and the Republicans under George W. Bush are pretty much even, as far as overextending the Federal government for benefit of a perceived greater good is concerned, during the time of an unpopular war.

How Government Gets Done

“You Scratch My Back, and I’ll Scratch Yours.” According even to conscientious Conservative Joe Scarborough, it’s the way that government works.

Style Over Substance: The Republican “Spread the Wealth” Plan

The Wall Street Rescue Plan Is the Republican Version of “Spread the Wealth.” The effects of the past twenty-eight years of Republican deregulation and Liberal-bashing have led to the greatest spreading of wealth in the Nation’s history. All 300,000,000 of us must “spread” our “wealth” to protect the McCain-named “greed and corruption on Wall Street.”

If “Spread the Wealth” Is Really the Republican Program, how can Senator McCain and Governor Palin get away with accusing Barack Obama? The answer is simple: it depends on John McCain’s sarcastic tone and Sarah Palin’s humorous barbs about “Joe the Plumber” and “Ed the Dairyman.” By pushing these false examples—of people who would actually gain in the wealth of Wall Street CEOs under an Obama plan—the Republican candidates exercise their own right to “Style Over Substance.”

“Style Over Substance” Is What the Republican Party Has Given Us for the Past Eight Years. Meanwhile, they have “spread the wealth” of middle-class American, to bailout the multimillionaires on Wall Street. $700,000,000,000 and counting: that’s how much taxpayer money the Republican “Spread the Wealth” plan has spread to rescue Wall Street. Where is the “trickle down” in that?

General Colin Powell Makes His Case for Barack Obama eloquently. While John McCain and Sarah Palin believe that being an Arab-American or a Muslim-American or a French-American or an American city dweller is a bad thing, Colin Powell points out the essential American point-of-view:

We Are All Americans. While Sarah Palin talks about “pro-America” parts of the country, nothing in the Barack Obama or Joe Biden record shows either leader categorically dismissing any American citizens as second-class.

“Style Over Substance”? “Second-Class Americans”? That’s the McCain-Palin approach, for which un-American positions they should be resolutely denied election to higher national office.

Style and Substance? That’s What Barack Obama Offers America throughout this long campaign and in presidential leadership to come. Now, early voting is begun in many states throughout the nation. One party in this election clearly seeks to represent all of America. We are one nation. United and indivisible.

Barack Obama and Joe Biden Ask for Your Vote. They need it now. America needs your vote now. It is time to show the “Spread the Wealth” Republicans that “Country First” means all the country. And “Hope” and “Change” represent the real American future, to end this long era that has put the failed policies of “Wall Street First” ahead of the safety and security of the greatest nation the world has ever known.

The Facts Speak for Themselves, when you stop to look at it. Herbert Hoover's Great Depression and Richard Nixon's Watergate and Ronald Reagan's budget deficits and George W. Bush's [Insert Disaster Here]. Which shell is your money hiding under?

The Costs Go Up and Up, the Treasury Balance Goes Down and Down, the national debt doubles in the past few years—

Who Do You Think Pays for Government Here in the U.S.? If you’ve ever had any doubt about the taxpayer tab, the current rescue package provides the clear answer.

But No One Really Likes to Pay Taxes. Especially during hard times like these, when many Americans can hardly afford them. National costs are up, our personal expenses are up, our investments are down, and soon we'll likely be out of work. What the heck can we do?

Luckily, the Republican Party Has an Answer Ready. And Republican presidential candidate John McCain says, “Hey! No problem!”

Here’s Something We Can All Try: On next-year’s income tax Form 1040, there will be a check box indicating that the taxpayer is a Republican. Every taxpayer who wants to can check the “Republican” box, and America really will be “the land of the free.”

How It Works:

□1: First, next to "Filing Status," check the box that says “Republican,” using a pen with black or blue ink. (No pencils, please!)

□2: Next, turn to the back of the form and fill in all of the spaces for tax credits.

□3: Then, sign and date the form and mail it to the United States Treasury.

□4: Once the U.S. Treasury receives all of the Republican 1040 forms paying no taxes and claiming all the tax credits, the Treasury will send the Forms 1040 out as bills.

Who Will We Send All These Form 1040 Bills to? Who will pay the bills? The answer is obvious, when you think about it. It’s the way that it has always been under Republican “spend and spend” government.

“Not to Worry,” Says Senator McCain. “Your Tax-Credit & Refund Check from Taxpayer Joe, the Plumber, will arrive as soon as this pesky little economic thing is over.”

Roasting the Chickens

It Has Been One Thing to Poke Some Fun at the Bad Guys during their long years of success, while they remained insulated from the realities that affect the rest of us.

It Is Another Thing When These Chickens Come Home to Roost, and it is our henhouse that they land on—the one that they’ve dismantled for us.


Since the 1980 Election of Republican President Ronald Reagan, the regulations and the treasury of the United States have been under assault by a determined policy of “free markets” and “trickle down” and “supply side.” It will always be folly to run a government into the ground by both lowering its income and increasing its costs.

But This Has Been the Thrust of the Republican “Free Market” Idea. If nothing else results from the current debacle, let us at least hope that the practical lesson, which was somehow not logically clear-enough to the “Show-Me” nation of Americans before, now has been shown. We are actually living out the logical disaster of living beyond our means.

When Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson Came Out to Congress and said, “Listen, you have to fix this thing quickly, and you have to give me $700 billion dollars, with no strings attached, to do it,” much of America doubted the move. Our “Hey, How Hard Can It Be?” President lost almost all of his credibility a long time ago. And now here he comes to terrorize us one more time.

President Bush and the Republicans have deliberately stuck America between a rock and a hard place.

Those Who Were Recently Referred to as the “Revolting Republicans,” get labeled thus because they waited until this last-minute, brink-of-disaster opportunity to speak up and say, “Hey! It’s a bad bill. We’re not gonna do it.”

Where Have These "Revolting Republicans" Been Up Until Now? And what political motive kept them silent before voting time earlier this week?

What Has Been Done Is Despicable. It has been despicable for the entire seven-and-a-half years. And the fact that there’s not much America can do about it right now is as infuriating to all the rest of America, who have the not-unreasonable attitude of, “Why should I bail out Wall Street?”

One Can Hardly Help But Wonder Whether This "Rescue" Request is just a feeble bumbler’s last-chance effort to completely empty out the coffers of the country, on his way out.

But the Current Evidence from the Markets tells us that indeed the President is right this time. At least he is right to the extent that Congress must act quickly. On the other hand, the arguments against this bill—with its made-up cost of $700 billion dollars—remain persuasively disturbing.

Six Years of Unbridled Control of Government, out of the past total of 28 years. That’s how long it took the Republicans to work their damage of de-regulation uncontrol. And this is the result.

Now, Please Listen to the Lesson Learned:

It Is Not Possible To Run Any Endeavor By Constantly Raising Expenses Above Income. Things must be paid for. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

Now That the Republicans Have Seen It, and the rest of us have to help pay for it—

Can We Please Pass the Stupid Bill, and then move on to a reasonable relationship with fiscal reality?

Why Did John McCain Cheat?

The American Voter Lost the First Presidential Debate. Each side—Republican and Democratic—has claimed victory. But read below to see how the American people clearly lost, and why.

The Debate Format Had Both Candidates Addressing Each Other in last Friday night's session. This would have given American viewers a chance to see how each candidate might serve our country in an actual negotiation setting. When the next President of the United States goes to meet with Vladimir Putin or President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the American people naturally don’t get to go with him. This debate was where we were supposed to see it.

But Senator McCain Balked. He Cheated. The Republican candidate for president broke his agreement on the spot. He gave no explanation, no warning. He would not look at Barack Obama. He would not meet Barack Obama’s eyes.


About His Refusal to Talk Directly with Barack Obama, Senator McCain asked Jim Lehrer, “Are You Afraid I Couldn't Hear Him?” Was this a self-deprecating remark about the Senator's age? Or a smirk at tricking Jim Lehrer, Barack Obama, and the American voter?

It Is Our Job as Voters to Make the Best Voting Choices We Can Make. This is our only job in any election. The disrespect that John McCain showed, whether deliberate or not, was to the responsible American voter, who made the time, at the end of the long work week, to honor our duty of making the best-informed decision possible.

All’s Fair in Love and War, goes the old saying. But this generally refers either to the enemies or to romance. And the McCain/Paling slogan is “Country First.” The question here is, which was it? Does cheating the American voter come under the heading of “All’s fair”? Or perhaps of “Country last”?

Even Republicans Are Innocent Until Proven Guilty

One of the Republican Candidates Is Under Investigation, as you probably know. The accusation concerns an alleged misuse of executive power in relation to the former commissioner of the Department of Public Safety in Alaska.

The Investigation Was Initiated by a Republican-led Committee, but the opponents say that it is “tainted,” and they are suing to stop the investigation until after the November elections.

Democratic Candidates Barack Obama and Joe Biden Know: The challenges of campaigning for the most-important elected positions in the United States are extremely demanding. Any candidate embroiled in an ethics or criminal investigation would much rather wait until after the elections are over.

Delay the Investigation until after November 4th and let the voters make up their minds first. Here in the United States of America, each person is innocent until proven guilty. Thus, the very law presumes the innocence of the Republican opponents concerning any or all crimes.

No Law Dictates the Transparency of Our Elected Officials. Historically, Republicans have always proven themselves especially good at keeping back things that they don’t want the voters to know. The Bush administration is currently engaged in such a situation concerning congressional subpoenas over possible political abuses related to hiring in the Justice Department under former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Transparency Plays a Role in the American Historical Legacy. Two excellent examples compare the missing minutes of Republican President Richard Nixon’s White House tapes with the opposite insistence by Democratic President Lyndon Johnson that all of LBJ's administration’s records would be available to history. Warts and all.

Will the American Voters Condemn the Opponent for her lack of transparency? One would hope that they would give her the benefit of the doubt. Innocent until proven guilty: it’s still the law here in the United States of America. Even under the Republicans.
